Letter Before Action
Step 1: Send a Letter Before Action
You must give the other side a chance to settle before going to court. Send a formal letter setting out your claim, what you want, and a deadline (usually 14 days).
- Keep it factual — state what happened, what they owe, and your deadline
- Send by recorded delivery or email with read receipt
- This is required by the Pre-Action Protocol — judges penalise skipping it
